Our tree surrounds

A mulch ring around a tree never stays tidy for long — it scatters, turns to mud in winter and leaves a dip that catches feet. A resin bound tree surround replaces all of that with seamless natural stone laid flush with the surrounding surface: tidy, trip-free and built around what the tree actually needs to keep thriving.

Because the surface is permeable, water and air pass straight through to the root zone instead of being sealed off — the very reason councils and landscape architects specify permeable treatment around street and public trees. The finish is trowelled to follow the tree’s actual base, with a proper clearance collar at the trunk, and it works as well around a single courtyard tree at home as it does across a streetscape or public space.

With Signature Resin Paving you get the job done properly: premium resin systems, an honest assessment of the tree and its root zone before we quote, a fixed written price, and a 10-year workmanship warranty behind the finish. The people who quote your tree surrounds are the people who lay them.

Where it works

01

Established garden trees

Paving added or renewed around a tree already growing in a residential courtyard or garden.

02

Street trees

Footpath and verge paving around council street trees, usually to a specified permeability standard.

03

Feature & specimen trees

Paved surrounds in commercial or landscaped settings where a tree is a deliberate design feature.

Key benefits

  • Permeable, so water and air continue reaching the root zone
  • Trowelled to follow the tree's actual base rather than a fixed geometric shape
  • Suits both residential trees and council street tree requirements
  • Seamless finish with no joints for surface roots to lift or crack
  • Can be specified over structural cells where root protection is required
  • Complements adjoining paths, driveways or plaza paving

Protecting the root zone

A tree's root zone generally extends well beyond its trunk, and we pay close attention to what happens at the surface above those roots, since that affects how much water and oxygen reach them. Sealing that area with an impermeable surface is one of the more common ways established trees decline over time.

Where root protection is a specific requirement — council trees in particular — we can specify the surface over a structural soil cell or root-protection base designed for that purpose, rather than a standard compacted sub-base.

Depth and detailing around the trunk are set to avoid damaging surface roots during installation, with the collar around the trunk left with appropriate clearance rather than paved hard against the bark.

How we install it

We assess the tree's root zone and any visible surface roots before deciding on base preparation, since disturbing roots during installation can do more harm than the paving itself is meant to prevent.

Where a council or landscape architect has specified a particular root protection method, we install to that specification rather than a standard base.

The trunk collar is set out first, with the surrounding surface trowelled to it, so the finished paving sits correctly around the tree from day one rather than being trimmed back later.

Common questions

Why pave around a tree instead of leaving mulch or bare ground?

Mulch scatters, bare ground turns to mud, and both leave an untidy ring and a trip hazard where the paving stops. A permeable resin bound surround stays flush, clean and firm underfoot all year round — and unlike solid paving, it still lets water and air through to the roots, so the tree keeps thriving underneath it.

How long does a tree surround last, and is it under warranty?

Prepared and laid correctly, a resin bound surround is a 15-plus year surface, and our workmanship is backed by a 10-year warranty (terms and conditions apply) alongside your rights under Australian Consumer Law. The warranty terms come to you in writing with the quote.

Will paving around the tree harm its roots?

Not the way we do it. The surface is permeable, so water and air keep reaching the root zone, and we assess the visible roots before deciding on base preparation. Where extra protection is required — council trees in particular — we install over a structural cell or root-protection base designed for exactly that.

Do I need council approval for a street tree surround?

Usually, yes, for work around a council-owned street tree — but that’s no reason to put it off. We can supply the technical specification councils typically ask for, and we install to whatever root-protection standard they set.

Will the surround crack as the tree grows?

A seamless resin surface handles gradual root growth far better than unit paving, which lifts and cracks at the joints. No surface is entirely immune to a tree that keeps growing underneath it, but this is the one designed to live alongside it — and our workmanship carries a 10-year warranty (terms and conditions apply).

How much maintenance does it need?

Very little. An occasional sweep and a rinse keeps the surface clean, and because water drains straight through, you don’t get the pooling or slime that makes shaded surrounds slippery. There’s no mulch to top up and no edging to reset every season.

How do I get a price?
